To date, most Latin American countries have adult HIV prevalence under 1%, which places them within the group “Countries with Concentrated Epidemics”; hence, they are focusing their responses on delivering actions to the most affected or most vulnerable populations so as to halt the spread of HIV and to reverse its impact. As such, some of the programs underway are peer counseling for men who have sex with other men (this includes the trans population) and for sex workers, screening for pregnant women as a way of reducing the probability of vertical transmission, hypodermic needle-exchanging, and others. These have, sadly, consumed a large part of available HIV response funds, so much so that little has been done to conduct large scale awareness raising, prevention, and stigma and discrimination reduction campaigns. ... UNGASS 2010: Civil society and the report As we reported in our last note, UNAIDS has provided instructions on submitting this year’s version of the UNGASS report, and many countries have already begun initial consultation meetings and data gathering. Since previous UNGASS country reports described progress yet failed to detail challenges countries must overcome to meet UNAIDS targets, and in some cases included unrealistic data, it is important for civil society to follow the drafting process closely so the report contai ... LAC: ARV treatment is neither accessible nor universal Latin America has made great strides recently on ARV treatment access. Countries like the Dominican Republic, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, and Ecuador started with a handful of people but now have registered thousands more in treatment programs, while Bolivia and Nicaragua, countries with low HIV prevalence rates, are providing ARV’s to around 900 PLWHA in each country. ... “Tell us about your country…” Letters from the Peruvian and Honduran communities We received news from the south-central Peruvian city of Ica, where the old hospital is being torn down and a new one under construction, that the lack of a coordinated program for replacing in- and out-patient care during the transition has turned into a death knell for PLWHA undergoing treatment due to unforeseen changes in health centers and increases in wait times. Patients who have not yet entered the HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Treatment) ... Read more & |

Argentina: New report is evidence of the need for comprehensive HIV vertical transmission prevention policies This recently published study states that 1500 new HIV cases in children younger than 14 years were reported in Argentina from 2001 to 2007, and most of these were attributed to vertical transmission. And this in spite of national legislation on the books (#25543) which mandates all pregnant women are offered an HIV detection test. Nevertheless, the rate of women who were not tested before giving birth in some areas of the country is higher than 30%. ... Read more & |
A reflection on how to improve efforts in the fight against mother to child HIV transmission given at the UN General Assembly A Global Fund representative spoke to world leaders, challenging them to commit to eliminating the transmission of HIV from mothers to children by 2015. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Global Fund’s Ambassador for the protection of mothers and children against AIDS, exhorted the attendees with her rather poignant speech to seek ways to eliminate that form of HIV transmission and discussed reasons why women and children continue to die while we have effective treatments. ...
