A reflection on how to improve efforts in the fight against mother to child HIV transmission given at the UN General Assembly

A Global Fund representative spoke to world leaders, challenging them to commit to eliminating the transmission of HIV from mothers to children by 2015.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Global Fund’s Ambassador for the protection of mothers and children against AIDS, exhorted the attendees with her rather poignant speech to seek ways to eliminate that form of HIV transmission and discussed reasons why women and children continue to die while we have effective treatments.

Many GF funded country projects include mother – child transmission prevention programs, but it is hard to understand why they still die. But what is even harder to understand is seeing how services for pregnant women are not fit to prevent the transmission to begin with.

Once again we ask all country project stakeholders to check their objectives, activities, and indicators and rethink them where necessary as well as to set realizable goals that truly seek to reduce vertical transmission that is so socially, economically, and politically destructive to our communities.
