GF Communities Delegation attends “Achieving the health related development goals in a rapidly changing world” seminar

Observatorio Latino here posts Javier Hourcade’s message on the GF Communities Delegation participation in the New York City seminar:

“… Today, Monday September 21^st, Rolake, Louis, and I attended a seminar titled “Achieving the health related development goals in a rapidly changing world”. Rolake was one of the panelists for the world public health session, and she gave a wonderful, moving speech that called attention to what communities and people are facing in terms of HIV related stigma and discrimination…”

She also challenged the donor community not to bury its head in the sand and use the economic crisis as an excuse to reduce pledges towards achieving the goals. There, she showed true courage and aggressiveness. In the end, she provided a panorama of health systems strengthening, saying something along the lines of “…we are all the same, the poorest of the poor, living in the same community and vulnerable to all health aspects of the three diseases detailed in the MDG’s.”

The people responded very positively, and I felt very proud of her. She spoke convincingly to those at the meeting without victimizing herself or our counterparts.
