CCM president is a woman and civil society member

On August 27, Maria Isabel Villegas, ACJ and NGO Forum in the Fight against AIDS representative, was chosen as president of the El Salvador Coordinating Committee, that country’s name for the CCM.

After hearing the news of her election, the civil society representative stated “I accept this responsibility with the conviction of contributing to unifying and promoting HIV/ AIDS prevention actions, strategies, and policies…”

Outgoing president, Dr. Ana Isabel Nieto from Caritas El Salvador, who was, by the way, named National HIV/ AIDS Program director and will begin her duties on September 1, also said, “…as the CCM, we have the responsibility of submitting proposals to the Global Fund and of supervising projects that it funds…”

She continued and explained that the CCM is comprised of six sectors working hand in hand: the government, PLWHA, people affected by TB, local and international NGO’s, academics, religious institutions, and international agencies.

Lastly, both women agreed to appeal for greater awareness on the magnitude of the threat constituted by the HIV/ AIDS pandemic and urged all of us to improve our national HIV and AIDS responses.
Congratulations Maria Isabel!!!
